Additionally, embroidery might slightly shrink stretchy materials. Despite these challenges, embroidery is one of the most durable and elegant personalization techniques.

Always start with a file that matches the final print size exactly. This means the file should be in the exact size it will be printed (1:1). Setting the correct dimensions for your design right from the beginning helps ensure that the print will have the precise measurements you want.

bleed ensures beautiful edges

Always include a bleed in your print files. This is the area that extends beyond the cut line and ensures that there are no unwanted white edges on your print due to slight shifts in printing. We recommend leaving a bleed of 3-5 mm. There is no need to add a bleed if the design does not reach the edge of the print.

check the readability of important details

Ensure that all essential details and text are clear and readable. The easiest way to do this is by enlarging the file to its actual size on your monitor (using a ruler to check) and analyzing the readability. Also, make sure the text is far enough from the edge of the print, as there can be up to 1 mm of variation during printing. Generally, we recommend leaving at least 4 mm of space between the text and the edge.

Ideally, the print file should be in vector graphics. Vector files consist of mathematical formulas, drawings and curves that allow the image to be scaled infinitely without losing quality. Most vector files are made in Adobe Illustrator. You can check the sharpness of your design by zooming in on the file and seeing if the details remain sharp or become pixelated. Raster files are also suitable for printing, but first, ensure the sharpness of the design by analyzing the file at 1:1 scale on your monitor.

Files intended for printing should be saved in the CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black) color space. The RGB (Red, Green, Blue) color model is mainly used for screens and may not provide accurate tones for print, making colors appear dull and reddish. The best format for print files is PDF. PDF is a universal format that keeps all elements in the file unchanged. Also, make sure that the PDF file is not unnecessarily large, as this can slow down the printing process.

Here are 11 small but very useful tips that will help you achieve the best and most sustainable solution.

do I need this project?

It all starts with the question, what benefits will this project bring to my company? If it’s known that a rebranding is on the way, it would not be a great idea to order shirts with the old logo. Often, the order of different stages in a project is also very important. Our client had already bought a large amount of shampoo bottles when we started designing them. We found that designing the bottles was a great challenge. Also, the range of products originally planned changed and it was difficult to match the colors of the shampoo bottle. As a result, we had to match the design with the bottle and not the other way around. At Kind, we always clarify the necessity of your project first, and we are not afraid to postpone the project, if doing so would bring benefits to your company.

invest in smart project management

An experienced project manager will help you avoid unnecessary costs and save time. A project manager will help you to think about important details that would otherwise fall through the cracks. This realization happens usually after the project fails due to lack of a project manager. Beauty salon Savannah ordered polyester capes and printed the logo on the capes using a durable silk-screen printing technique. The problem was that the cape was washed very often, and despite the durable print, it still wore off. The customer turned to Kind and we came up with a smart solution: we took the customer’s used capes and attached a waterproof material with the logo on the printed area. This material almost does not wear out because it is not printed – wash it even a 1000 fold!

don’t over design

In a project, it is always good to think about whether every detail is necessary. If I order a gift box, is there a need for a thank you card or could the message be designed as part of the box instead? The card will probably be read and thrown in the trash. A beautiful and minimalistic approach would be to design the contents of the card on the inside of the box cover instead.

With over designing, there is also a risk that the product loses its main focus, always start by finding out what the purpose of the product is.

use quality products

No matter how great a design you have, it does not matter much if the designed product wears off the shirt after a few washes or becomes dull. Choosing a high-quality product is a crucial step towards a more environmentally friendly design. With today’s production technologies, the cost of a high-quality product is the same or only slightly higher than that of cheap junk. Low-quality printable clothing wears out in less than a year (even with the first wash!), are uncomfortable to wear, and seams come loose (sewing quality is low). Higher quality products last for years and thereby help reduce our environmental footprint. Quality products are characterized by thicker fabric, straight seams, comfortable cuts (that fit well on all body types) and are ethically produced where farmers get fair pay.

choose recycled materials

Do you know how many trees it takes to produce a ton of paper? 24. In 2021, the United States recycled 68% of paper produced and 91.4% of OCC (recycled paperboard). By using recycled paper, you save:

100% of trees,

31% of energy,

53% water,

39% produce less solid waste.

In addition to being environmentally friendly, recycled paper has a unique appearance that demonstrates your brand’s commitment to having a sustainable mindset. Such materials always have a unique appearance and help your brand stand out from others. It may be argued that recycling materials requires more energy than producing new ones, but we at Kind believe that in any case it is better to recycle the existing material than to produce new mass into an already polluted world. prefer natural materials

Starting off we should define what a natural material is. Natural materials are those that can be found in nature and can be used immediately or with little processing. That said, a distinction should also be made with natural materials: wood can be used with very little processing, but aluminum (which is also found in nature) requires a lot of processing before it can be used. The best recyclable material is glass. By ordering glass drinking cups for your team, you don’t have to buy plastic cups for them every time at the company’s expense. The glass is 100% recyclable, which means it does not lose its quality. In addition, glass helps to best preserve the aroma of the product and the texture of the food.

prefer products made with renewable energy

Using natural and environmentally friendly materials is only half of the battle, attention must also be paid to production. Is production sustainable, using e.g. solar or wind energy. The best example is one of Kind’s main brands – Neutral. The cotton used in the production of the Danish brand is 100% organic, and Neutral’s production facilities run on renewable energy. Our other core brand, Pure Waste, has also taken a step towards more sustainable production and will complete the installation of a solar panel park this year and switch to 100% renewable energy. We only have one world, and if we continue as we are, we will soon have none. Everything is fine at the moment, but we also have to think about the future generations. Renewable energy is the only solution for the future, choose it today!

choose a “greener” print

In addition to choosing a sustainable product to print on, it is equally important to choose more environmentally friendly print production. In print production, there are two important aspects that should be taken into account: the energy consumption of the printer and the printing technique.

A very good example of printers with low energy consumption are Epson inkjet printers – such printers save up to 85% of the energy consumed and produce up to 85% less carbon dioxide compared to laser printers.

The advantage of digital printing is that printing does not require the production of printing plates, but there are also very big differences between types of digital printing. Solvent-based inks cause allergies and are toxic. Production workers who work with such inks breathe in toxic fumes every day and harm their health. Choose cleaner and safer inks! Water-based inks do not harm the skin and allow the fabric to breathe. Such inks also leave a more beautiful result.

don’t pollute

There is often a tendency to overproduce prints for “just in case”. You order 3,000 business cards, but you are offered 5,000 for the same price. At this point, you should think twice about whether these extra 2,000 cards are still needed in reality, or whether they will remain gathering dust in the office closet. During football matches, the arena has printed 5,000 flyers, these flyers are placed on the windscreen wipers of the cars. Most of the flyers are blown away by the wind, and those that remain are simply thrown on the ground. Don’t pollute! At this point, it would be better to print 1000 flyers and hand them to the people that show interest in the information.

don’t overpack

Similar to overproducing, it is also very easy to start over packing the product. It often happens that the product is packaged fivefold, at this point think about whether this product needs such heavy packaging. Manufacturers are afraid that the product may break during transportation. When the product arrives at the office, the product is opened, checked and packaged again. At Kind, we use recycled paper bags, natural kraft paper and pack the products between reusable folders. Nothing happens to these products during transport, because they move from the production unit to the courier truck and then to the customer. Our society tends to have a common misconception when it comes to aesthetics – overpackaging is luxurious. For example, poetry cards wrapped in silk fabric are placed on a pillow and packed in a multi-layer package, which is one color on the inside and another color on the outside. The cardboard is laminated and packed in a bag, and the bag is sometimes placed in the transport package. Whew, that was a mouthful! Maybe otherwise you wouldn’t notice it, but written out like that, it sounds absurd!

Simple packaging can be very beautiful – e.g. the brown cardboard packaging is minimalistic and aesthetic. There are many options for beautiful and minimalistic packaging, contact us and we will find the most beautiful packaging just for you.

design things that can be reused/recycled

When the product is consumed, what happens to the packaging. It will probably be thrown away, in the best case scenario the packaging material will be recycled. What if you design a packaging so awesome that you don’t want to throw it away, instead the packaging finds a new use. The gift card pocket, which is made of metal, could be used perfectly as a credit card holder. The milk package could be designed to be resealable and made of glass, easily removable stickers could be placed there, so the milk package can later be used as a water bottle. If you order bags for your employees, choose a dark, shapely backpack. It can be used as a laptop bag, a sports bag and is also suitable for taking on a plane. Our team at Kind faced a similar question: what are the products that we should include in our studio’s selection or that should be worn by our team daily? 

I’ll try to highlight the basic principles of selecting clothes that are worth considering!

branded clothes (short-term perspective)

There’s a real need for branded products that are meant for marking or advertising short-term events (conferences, camps, festivals etc.). 

Based on experience, we can say that these products are made using fewer resources (material, working time or creative attention). They are characterised by thinner materials, more fragile threads, lower-quality seams, synthetic garments and colours, and simpler styles. The result is less comfort and elegance! 

Lower quality products are consumed in abundance (e.g., tourist shops) and cheaper items can even be found among the products of well-known designers. The reason may be that they wish to earn more profit, or they just lack better selection!

branded clothes (long-term perspective)

There is no reason to think that higher-quality branded clothes are too expensive or not worth buying! Depending on the brand, they also vary in price and quality. But premium products are definitely longer-lasting and more comfortable! Their materials are often thicker, the seams are more precise and stronger, the colours are more skin-friendly and resistant to washing, the styles are more comfortable, the products are more practical and elegant. For example, the zippers, collars, sleeves and hems are made with great precision. 

High-quality branded clothes are usually selected for teams for their everyday outfit, or for sports clubs who need clothes that withstand heavy use, e.g., football matches, hiking, physical exercise. Top-notch sportswear must be stretchy, breathable and durable.

Designer clothes are good-looking, offer emotional pleasure and are a good way of expressing a brand or yourself. Designer clothes differ from premium clothes in many ways – they have more interesting styles, wide and trendy colour selection, rich selection of materials, and sustainable production journey. These types of products don’t cause skin irritation, they let the body breathe more naturally and they also look great. Eco products are a good choice for children’s clothes, people with allergies, night and homewear and in fact, for everyone else too!

It is assuring to see that eco-friendly products are already widely available in shops at a competitive price level, and new products keep getting added to the selection!

kraft paper and tones

Kraft paper comes in a surprisingly wide selection of options with varying levels of brightness, diverse colours, patterns, levels of smoothness, thicknesses… We would like to highlight at least two: interesting flecked kraft paper and gold natural carton kraft.  

Kraft paper is popular for two main reasons! First, the light background goes well with Christmas colours like red, plum purple, dark green etc. Secondly, kraft paper has enough character to be combined with a monochrome print, for example black or white. White ink print on UV or silk-screen printed kraft paper, as seen on the sample image, gives really beautiful results!

Kraft paper is traditionally used for creating wrapping paper, gift packages, envelopes, tags, Christmas cards, Christmas menus and calendars. Moreover,  the ingredients of kraft paper are almost completely reusable and the paper is very durable.

Keywords for colour trends of 2021s: light, warm, lively, natural and unique. Gorgeous tones are the main reason why colourful designer paper catches our eye!

Colourful designer paper goes well with minimalistic designs, because the paper acts as the main visual component. You can also add an effect to the printed products by stamping (special shape, objects with special shapes, cut-outs, grooves) or by special print: metallic and pantone colours, 3D varnish or white ink.

Designer paper is also used for making envelopes for Christmas cards; you can print on these envelopes or add an additional paper strap.

The most Christmassy paper may be one with a texture or pattern that reminds us of snow: glittering snow, wild snow, slushy snow or powdery snow. At Studio Kind, we are able to print on really interesting paper: textured paper, thick cartons, thin silk paper, flecked paper or paper with uneven surfaces and edges. The different tones of white paper (light grey, delicate yellow, warm white, clear white, etc.) also help to create a unique background for the prints.

White paper matches best with colour print – in CMYK, pantone colours, gold or metallic tones (pink, dark blue, etc.). Christmas reminds us of beautiful vintage postcards that feature idyllic Christmas graphics are on thick cardboard or carton. You can find traditional vintage cards like that from Café Supelsaksad.

GOTS – let’s leave chemicals out of the production process

This certifies that the cotton used in production is 100% organic.

Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is recognized as the world’s leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibers. The GOTS certificate, which is inspected by the Control Union, defines high-level environmental criteria for the entire organic textile supply chain.

This also indicates that instead of chemicals, the cotton plants have been gown with biological fertilizers and earthworms. This leads to cleaner rivers and groundwater, enriched biodiversity and a poison-free work environment. And that’s how you get high-quality cotton!

EU ECOLABEL – we reduce, recycle and reuse

This certifies that the clothing has been made with the smallest possible ecological impact.

It is an official EU label for greener products. Products with the ecolabel have a relatively modest impact on the quality of air, water and soil, as well as on the consumption of natural resources, global warming and biodiversity. The products have to pass rigorous environmental testing, after which they are verified by an independent authority.

For example, Neutral cleans and recycles waste water and reduces and reuses scraps. Moreover, they use environmentally friendly dyes in their production process and are constantly updating their clothing manufacturing methods.

FAIRTRADE – this is no charity, but trade under fair conditions

This label certifies that the cotton farmers receive fair pay for their work.

The Fairtrade label is an independent guarantee, which ensures that cotton used to make a given item is certified in accordance with international Fairtrade standards. The label also proves that farmers who grow cotton for Neutral receive fair pay for their work and produce, which enables them to invest in better tools and to send their kids to school.

NEUTRAL RESPONSIBILITY – green energy is an excellent choice

This certifies that Neutral’s production facilities run on renewable energy.

Neutral’s production is based on renewable energy, which helps to create a cleaner environment and fight climate change. By using renewable energy, Neutral helps to reduce CO2 emissions.

The surplus energy from production is directed to other local networks.

SA8000 – we ensure that employees are doing well

This guarantees that factories comply with international human rights standards.

SA8000 is based on the principles of international human rights standards. It measures the companies’ performance in eight key areas: child labor, forced labor, health and safety, free association and collective bargaining, discrimination, disciplinary action, working time and benefits.

OEKO-TEX 100 – peace of mind about the items you wear

This ensures that the product is 100% free of any harmful substances.

Oeko-Tex Standard 100 shows that the textile has been tested for substances that are harmful to humans. The label certifies that there are no dangerous chemicals or other harmful substances in the product. This makes Oeko-Tex the ultimate guarantee that clothing manufactured by Neutral is clean and ready to be worn. There is no need to wash Neutral items before wearing them for the first time.
